Computational photography. Small windows of time are sampled at random across a film.
From these moments, pixels from each frame are combined using various statistical algorithms. The image does not represent an average moment, but a statistical tendency... what things most often looked like, what they could have looked like.
The results often resemble carefully masked collages or long exposures, even though no manual editing or compositing occurs.
